Workshop description

Every second year ECMWF hosts a workshop on the use of high performance computing in meteorology. High performance computer architectures are becoming ever more complex which presents significant challenges for the ongoing development of operational meteorological applications.

The 18th workshop on high performance computing in meteorology will take place at ECMWF, Reading, UK, 24-28 September 2018.

This workshop will look especially at scalability and I/O of weather and climate applications on HPC systems.

In particular we invite presentations addressing the following topics related to weather and climate applications:

  • Modelling mathematics and numerical methods

  • Programming models and domain-specific languages (DSL)

  • High performance I/O and post-processing

  • Operational use of HPC in weather and climate

  • Machine learning and data analytics

  • Large dataset visualisation

The workshop consists of 30 minute presentations, panel discussions, keynote talks from invited speakers and a mini exhibition for vendors to showcase their activities.

Workshop aims

Our aim is to provide a venue where users from our Member States and around the world can report on their experience and achievements in the field of high performance computing during the last two years; plans for the future and requirements for computing power will also be presented.

Vendors of supercomputers will have the opportunity to talk to managers and end users of meteorological computer centres about their current and future products. Meteorological scientists can present their achievements in the development of parallel computing techniques and algorithms, and can exchange ideas on the use of supercomputers in future research. Computer scientists can give an update on their efforts in providing tools which will help users to exploit the power of supercomputers in the field of meteorology. The challenges of creating a computer centre infrastructure for HPC can be discussed.

Attendance

This workshop is open to national weather services of ECMWF's Member and Co-operating States, to other major meteorological centres, and to users and manufacturers of super-computers. If you are interested in attending the workshop please complete the registration form.

Registration is 150 GBP/participant. Registration fee includes ice-breaker, evening dinner, lunches and coffee-breaks. Payment is due by 29 July, please see the payment instructions.

The registration fee will be waived for representatives of Member and Co-operating States and accepted speakers.

Please note that we do not have any funding available towards participant expenses for travel and attendance to the workshop.
